Stop Forking Us!

Tuesday, June 12th, 2007

Wow, it seems as if the number of Uniform Server forks has now doubled what it was the last time i checked around. In fact, Uniform Server is forked more than any other software i know, :d or to say any WAMP server ever! Even XAMPP does not have as many forks as we do, lol.

But seriously, we do not mind people forking the server even though we would rather have you as part of the team to help make Uniform Server better, but forking the server is something not so good for us. Plus, i hate it when users fork the server and dont give credit to Uniform Server and while some try to battle the fact, we all can see that it is a fork of the Uniform Server.

Some forks are: MSAS, XSAS, JSAS, VertrigoServ, Glossword WAMP, Mov’Amp, and some others…

We would like it better of course if the developers of most of our forks would just try and help make the core product better rather than branching off, but i guess to them forking is better, so please before you fork, contact us!

We will be tackling some of our forkers…

Hire Me? & Donations

Tuesday, June 12th, 2007

To talk about the donations at first, as you all know, i got into an accident at work around April in which a harmed robber shot me with a gun, well around May, my job’s insurance cut off my workers compensation because the store owner didn’t pay his bill so his policy lapsed (still working on that one, might have to sue), so i am still looking for a job that can pay me enough at least to pay my bills and rent.

Donating has been something that i have really being trying to avoid but it seems as we have to go there, since that is what open source lives on. Donations also helped me with the buying of my new PC (thanks to the 3 users who did) and though we are not asking for a million, even though we wont mind that :d, anything helps.

Please if you are in the Atlanta area and looking for staff, in any technical field, please let me know. I can send you my resume, and i am not limited to web development and design alone.

The thought of Ads is another thing i really don’t like. I really don’t like placing ads on my sites for a lot of reasons, so for now i am trying to keep away from that.

UniCenter

Tuesday, June 12th, 2007

Well i have never really spoken about UniCenter on here so i decided today to do that. The UniCenter is a section of the Uniform Server Website that provides documentation and pages about the Uniform Server, running it and installing some other products. The UniCenter is being ran by a Uniform Server user, Ric (aka. Mike Gleaves).

Ric joined the Uniform Server Forum around April 2006, and after he started giving support to other users, i think he made a website of his own with some help pages and gave me the link, after looking around, i thought that would be cool if we moved it to the Uniform Server website and gave it a name of its own. We decided on UniCenter and since then its been a nice place to direct new users or users from the forum looking for help.

What i like about the UniCenter is the fact that its not biased on us since all the pages are written by Ric, he tells us what might be wrong or what he/other users feels needs to be done in the Uniform Server. “Its a pretty cool tool” and i like the fact that he keeps its up to date and fills it with information users might need.

So here is to Mike Gleaves (aka. Ric)! For a job well done. He does not get paid to do this, but he does it for the love of open source just as we do. :D

SVN & Nominate UniServer!

Monday, June 4th, 2007

Before we go on to anything, we would be glad if you could please help nominate your favorite WAMP Software on SourceForge.Net in the Community Choice Awards. Nominate us in as much category as you can. In fact, you can nominate us in every category… Don’t think negative, your nomination will count, every inch of it, so please nominate us:

Nominate On SourceForge.net

Our SVN at SourceForge.Net is now in use. You can catch the latest development build and latest test and plugins in there, but please note that some might not be finished and some do work perfectly. Also take not that any plugin from now on only works with version 3.4-Sluger and up due to the new system. If you are an expert, you should be able to set it to work with 3.2+

3.4-Sluger Released!

Saturday, June 2nd, 2007

Its been a year plus since the last release of the Uniform Server and while we are sorry about this, there was nothing we could do. It could have even been for the better, but its just that life does not turn out the way we have it planned or the way we have it worked out. After 3.3 was released, i moved out of my cousin’s house to my apartment and started college and a new job (which i ran my way up to manager within the year :)) and everything got tangled so the development of the server was not really seen by users, but it was just been worked on in the background.

Well, other things happened this year, but to give all the glory to the One above, i got time off (in a way) and had time to do some more work and fix my schedule and everything. Uniform Server 3.4-Sluger has come a long way and now it’s ready to be released to you and for you!

The server is packed with updated Apache 2.0, PHP 5, MySQL 5, ActivePerl 5, phpMyBackupPro 2, phpMyAdmin 2 and so on. Admin Panel 2 has also been updated and packed with some new and cool features. The main loading page is now http://localhost and no longer the http://localhost/apanel and you can find some changes to the server there also.

The server was actually set to be released June 1-4 with June 1 being the primary date, but we had to release it now because PHP 5.2.3 was released May 31, and we had to wait for the new build of eAccelerator to run with it. That just came out so everything is set now.

Well, enough talking, i think its time you go now and download the server! If you have any problems, start a topic in the forums.

[EDIT]
To talk about a few things on this release, a. please note that the way phpMyAdmin looks was not our doing, you can contact the phpMyAdmin team about that, b. the size increase cannot could not be avoided, so please don’t scream, If we could do something about it, we would but the size increase is mostly from the core products.
